There appears to be evidence that retail mouthwashes and toothpastes can inactivate the COVID-19 virus. Toothpastes including those with zinc, stannous fluoride, or amine fluoride. Mouthwashes tested include formulas with hydrogen peroxide, 0.12% chlorohexidine, or stannous fluoride. These have been suggested as an adjunct to other measures that the public should be advised to adopt, given the safety record and high levels of use.
Perhaps these measures should be implemented by those increasing their risk of contraction by travelling on public transport, visiting people as part of their bubble, occupations at high risk of coming into contact with people and high activity environments, and those shopping in main street areas. It would make sense to have thorough hygiene protocols before leaving the house and as close as possible before contacting other people.
It would also make sense for the dental profession to communicate oral hygiene measures online, directly to patients if this advice is government-supported.
