Dental tourism has become popular in South East Asian communities such as Cambodia, Thailand and Vietnam, where tourism is a major contributor to the economy. People search for dental care outside their local systems- to find procedures such as implants and ceramic crowns which are affordable and of good quality, and want a holiday too.
The effects of the pandemic- with the additional shift of healthcare to emergency procedures- meant that international travel is at a standstill, impacting dental tourism and the component of the £31.6 billion global medical tourism it brings. There is still no sight of 'normal' travel. Some clinics thriving on tourists looking for treatment may have been forced to reduce their staff, as this part of the economy plummets.
