Based on load distribution of the saddle areas.
Great for providing a design guide.
Claims any individual saddle of a denture should be entirely tooth supported or mucosa supported.
Claims that even if there was a finite distribution of load, in time, the ratio of the forces between tooth and tissue would be altered by reactions in these living tissues.
3 groups.
1. Class 1 saddles- entirely tooth supported- teeth at either end of saddle can fully support load.
2. Class 2 saddles- Entirely mucosa supported- includes free-end saddles and bounded saddles where length or condition of abutment teeth contraindicates tooth borne saddle.
3. Class 3- Temporary placement for bounded saddles until placed in class 1 or 2. Problems with factors such as anatomy and pathology of abutments, length and position of saddles and nature of alveolar bone and mucosa will influence if class 1 or 2.
Kennedy classification is usually preferred as most universally used, simple, and differentiates between bounded and free-end saddles.
