The Dentists Act 1878 created the dentists' register so only qualified dentists could be added. An unfortunate clause meant that others could practice dentistry as long as they didn't call themselves dentists. 100 years later, the Dentists Act 1921 meant that only those who were actually qualified dentists could practice dentistry. However, an older clause enabled anyone who could prove they had practiced dentistry for five years prior could also join the register. It was within the 1970's that the unqualified and '1921 dentists' retired.
