Since I haven't extracted any teeth in a while, I thought it would be good to visit some sometimes overlooked points
Operator position: If right handed, stand on the right hand side, in front of the patient to extract any teeth apart from LR3-8 (in which case behind the patient may be best (N.B lower the chair more))
Height of the dental chair: If the site is too high or too low, there is a mechanical disadvantage, a tired arm and discomfort.
For maxillary teeth: adjust the chair so that the operation site is 3 inches below operators shoulder level.
For mandibular teeth: adjust the chair so that the operation site is 6 inches below operators shoulder level.
Light: Good illumination is essential.
An efficient, unhurried, methodological method works best, alongside sympathetic encouragement which will gain confidence and patient co-operation.
Try not to display instruments in-front of the patient.
Feet apart. Feel balanced with adequate footwear and even flooring.
Although these points are often overlooked, they are good guidelines which I try to remember. During dental emergency placement however, I saw and extracted patients teeth supine without any problems or complaints. There are many ways of doing something well :].
